Applying for a Permit to Carry a Handgun

The following instructions are the same for the initial and renewal application

The Concealed Carry Permits service allows for online submission of both initial and renewal applications. Approved applications are due for renewal every two (2) years. Renewal applications can be submitted up to four (4) months before the expiration date. Concealed Carry Permit applicants need to have been fingerprinted for firearms purposes in New Jersey and assigned an SBI number before they can apply for a Concealed Carry Permit. If you have lived outside of the state of New Jersey in the last ten (10) years, please fill out form SP-066 (Consent for Mental Health Records) and upload it to your application.

If you live in Readington Township, enter NJ0102200 when asked for an ORI.

Information  required at the time of application:

  • SBI Number
  • Upload of recent photograph (on a light background including head and shoulders)
  • One (1) training record completed within the past two (2) years, instructor name, and qualification date
  • Personal Information: including Social Security Number and Driver's License Number
  • Background Information
  • Contact Information for four (4) non-family related references
  • Information on handguns to be carried
  • $50.00 payable to: New Jersey State Police

Due prior to your application being approved:

  • $150.00 payable to: Readington Township via Municipay

Dual Residents WITH PROOF of dual residency MUST apply to the police department ORI where you reside in NJ.

Out of State residents who are NOT dual residents, MUST apply to a NJSP ORI. Applicants must apply to the closest NJSP Station by geographic location/mileage. Please contact the NJSP Station that is the closest prior to submission of your application.

NJ Office of the Attorney General (DAG, AAG), prosecutors, judges and armored car employee applicants MUST apply to a NJSP ORI.

If you apply to the incorrect ORI, your application will be WITHDRAWN. Fees are non-refundable

Once your application has been received in full it will be assigned to a Detective to conduct a background investigation.  During this investigation, the Detective will contact you and the four references that endorsed your application.

When the investigation is complete and your permit is approved, you will be notified via email that your electronic permit is available for download.  

CALLING FOR UPDATES WILL NOT SPEED UP THE PROCESS

**If any of the preceding information is not complete or is incorrect, the application will be withdrawn and the applicant will need to reapply.
